Common Reasons for Valid Claims
A copyright claim against you may be valid if:
| Situation | Why It’s Infringement |
|---|---|
| Uncleared samples | You used part of another recording without permission |
| Unlicensed covers | You recorded a cover song without obtaining a mechanical license |
| Unauthorized recordings | You used someone else’s master recording |
| No distribution rights | You uploaded content you don’t have rights to distribute |
| Voice cloning | You used AI to replicate someone’s voice without authorization |
| Stolen beats | You used a producer’s beat without a proper license |
Protecting Yourself from Claims
Before You Release
- Clear all samples - Get written permission or licenses for any samples used
- License cover songs - Obtain mechanical licenses through services like HFA, Songfile, or DistroKid’s cover song licensing
- Document everything - Keep contracts, licenses, and written agreements
- Verify collaborators - Ensure everyone involved has agreed to the release
Keep These Records
| Document | Why You Need It |
|---|---|
| Beat licenses | Proves you have rights to use the instrumental |
| Sample clearances | Proves you cleared any samples |
| Collaboration agreements | Shows ownership splits and permissions |
| Work-for-hire contracts | Proves you own recordings made by others |
| Mechanical licenses | Proves right to release cover songs |
